Kendred T. Smith (Born Jan 18, 1978 ), a twin to Corey Smith, known Professionally as Jimi Kendrix, is an American music producer, drummer, and entrepreneur from New York City.[1][2][3]
Early Life
Born and raised in Queens,[5] Smith began his musical career at the age of 2 playing drums in his grandparents' church, Zion Tabernacle Deliverance Church, in Queens Village NY, where his grandfather is Bishop George H Attmore. It was through his nurturing in the church by his mother Starlett Attmore, a well known Gospel singer, and father Kernal Smith, a well-known recording Bass player, that he knew music was going to be in his future.
Career
Smith's first encounter with the music industry came after an opportunity came to produce music for his God-sister R&B recording artist Kelly Price, who at the time was working on her debut album on island def Jam, called "Soul of a woman". Smith and his bros were signed to Priceless Music Management which was Kelly's production company as producers and artists. From there, Smith began touring and performing as a drummer along with his bros (the Smith bros) for Kelly and artists like Charlie Wilson and Iyanla Vanzant. One milestone was performing as back up singers for RKelly's Grammy performance in Nyc for his Hit Record "I believe I can Fly".
Smith has since taken his musical abilities to new heights after being exposed to many in the industry. One life-changing encounter was his signing an in-house production deal with record executive Irv Gotti (Top Dawg productions/Murder Inc Records) where he produced records for Shyne "Jimmy Choo", Ashanti, Lloyd, Ja rule, with big charting singles like "Wonderful ft RKelly and Ashanti & Caught Up ft Lloyd). For "Wonderful", Smith won his first hit record and ASCAP award.[4] Smith's other significant encounter was with Superstar Jay Z, who was recording the Platinum-selling BLUEPRINT 2 at the time.[7][8] The Hit Record "My Way" ft Frank Sinatra was created produced by Smith, quickly solidifying his place in the musical world. From there, Smith was created but Kendreds motivation and inspiration would always be his background and upbringing.
It was not long after his stint with Murder Inc., that he formed his own production company and team with Jesse Matthews (J math), a reporter who interviewed Smith for a feature article in Scratch Magazine.[6] From there, and many years later STREET RADIO was formed producing hit records for artists like 50cent "I Like the Way She Do It" & Off and On, both big singles.
Not only has Smith been a voice in the music world but he’s also taken it into the education system, working in schools, starting as a paraprofessional but as a behavior specialist in inner-city charter schools, all while balancing his music career. From 2009 - 2018 at Renaissance Charter Highschool for Innovation in East Harlem, he helped create the first high school record label called Innovation Records. He’s also coached their basketball teams to 5 city CSA championships which still hang in the school's hallways today.
Till this very day, Smith is producing records with artist all across the world and in all genres. He is the creator of PRODUCERS ACADEMY LLC. that focuses on teaching youth the art of music production as an incentive to get them to improve their grades and behavior in school. He is a motivational speaker and CEO of Producers Academy Showcase, a music mentorship program, where he does yearly shows in his city.[9] Smith takes pride in pride in his music career, his service to his community as an educator, mentor, and most importantly where he comes from. God Family Music is his motto, and one of his most said quotes remain, "Jesus Loves You".
Personal life
Smith has two sons - Kendred T. smith Jr. and Karter Donavan Smith.
