Michael Jeffrey Lyon (born 1959) is an American entrepreneur (space-sector focused),[7] lawyer, and cycle touring author. He is the President of Lyon Capital Inc. and[1][6] co-founder of Xtronaut Enterprises.[2][13] He served as the Special Assistant to William Seidman, Chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and the Resolution Trust Corporation, during the Savings and Loan Crisis.[3][1][19]

Early life and education

Mr. Lyon was born in 1959 in Massachusetts and grew up in Evanston, Illinois.

In 1981, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in History from Brandeis University[27] where he was Captain of the Sailing Team and later studied at the London School of Economics,[28] before going on to receiving a J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1984.[29] At Harvard, he served as a research assistant to Professor Roger Fisher on Negotiations and Dean Clark on Corporate Law.

Career

Legal Practice

Lyon specializes in banking, corporate, and international matters, and began his career practicing law at the Washington D.C. law firm of Covington and Burling and is currently Senior Counsel at Akrivis Law Group PLLC, Washington D.C.[6][8]

Government Service

He served as the Special Assistant to the Chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and the Resolution Trust Corporation (RTC), working for Chairman L. William Seidman (1988-1990),[19] during the Savings and Loan Crisis, where the United States experienced large numbers of banks and over 700 savings and loan failures. He was later appointed as Assistant Director of Resolutions, at the RTC.[1]

Lyon then became the Vice President and General Counsel at the real estate workout firm, J.E. Robert Company, before going on to founding his own workout and international advisory company Lyon Capital, Inc. in 1991.[4]

Space and Ocean

In 2001, he joined Space Adventures Ltd. as the Vice President and General Counsel. During this period the company organized the space tourist flights on the Russian Soyuz vehicle of Dennis Tito and Mark Shuttleworth, the first person from Africa to go to space.[30] He later worked on additional space projects and advises firms in this sector.[6][9][10][31][32]

In 2013, Lyon cofounded Xtronaut Enterprises with Dr. Dante Lauretta, Principal Investigator of the NASA OSIRIS-REx mission and Professor at the University of Arizona, to inspire students to be interested in science and technology by creating space-related STEM board games, education programs, and education-related space missions.[5][11][12][13][33]

Lyon provides business and legal advice to companies in the new commercial space sector, and serves as a mentor and associate at the technology accelerator, Creative Destruction Lab, working with companies in space and AI sectors.[6][13]

Lyon worked with Deep Ocean Expeditions,[32] which utilized Russian MIR submersibles for tourism and film work, and submerged 2525 meters in the MIR 2 submersible to the hydrothermal vents, known as 9 North, in 2003.[33]
